Plain-English Summary (for reference only — not a substitute for the rule text above)
This summary is not the rule. The rule text controls.
If you are sued in small claims court, you have 20 days after being served with the court papers to file a written answer. You must file that answer with the court and send a copy to the person who sued you. There is a filing fee to submit your answer, but you can ask the court to waive or delay the fee if you cannot afford it.
If you do not file an answer within those 20 days, the other party can start a default process against you. A default can result in the court ruling against you without hearing your side of the story. So it is important to respond on time if you want to fight the case.
