§ 24-13-4 [Penalty for Overclaiming Witness Fees]

If you are a witness in a court case, you can be paid witness fees for your time. But you must only claim the exact amount you are owed. Claiming more than you deserve is treated seriously under this rule.

If you overclaim your witness fees, you lose all the fees you would have received. On top of that, you must pay the other party four times the amount you wrongly claimed. For example, if you falsely claimed an extra $100, you would owe $400 in penalties plus lose your fees entirely.
