§ 24-3-3 [Contemporaneous Writings and Ambiguity]

When two documents are written around the same time and relate to the same subject, a court can use both of them together to figure out what they mean. For example, if you signed a contract and also wrote a letter on the same day that explains part of the deal, a judge can look at both to understand the full picture.

Sometimes a written document has language that is unclear or confusing. In that case, outside evidence, like spoken conversations or other writings, can be brought in to explain what the unclear words actually mean. This applies whether the confusion is obvious on the face of the document or only becomes clear when you apply it to a real situation.
