§ 24-3-9 [Receipts as Prima Facie Payment Evidence]

A receipt for money is not automatic proof that a debt was fully paid. It only serves as a starting point, meaning a court will treat it as some evidence of payment, but not final proof.

Either side in a case can use spoken or written statements to challenge what a receipt shows. For example, if someone claims a receipt proves they paid in full, the other person can bring in outside information to dispute that or explain what the receipt actually covers.
