§ 24-4-401 [Definition of Relevant Evidence]

Evidence is "relevant" if it helps prove or disprove something important in a case. Even a small connection to the facts of the case is enough to make evidence relevant.

Think of it this way: if a piece of evidence makes something more likely or less likely to be true, it counts as relevant. For example, a receipt showing someone was in another city could make it less likely they committed a crime that happened somewhere else that same day.

This definition sets a low bar on purpose. Courts want to allow evidence that genuinely helps figure out what happened, as long as it connects to the facts that matter in the case.
