Rule 30.9 Determining Accuracy of Plea

Before a judge accepts a guilty plea, they must ask enough questions to make sure the person actually did what they are pleading guilty to. This happens right there in the courtroom, on the official record.

This protects people from pleading guilty to something they did not do. Even if someone says "guilty," the judge still needs to hear enough facts to confirm the plea makes sense. A simple "yes, I did it" may not be enough on its own.
