Rule 2.5 Plaintiff/Defendant/Petition.

In probate court, the words used to describe the people involved in a case can differ from what you might see in other courts. Instead of "plaintiff," you might be called a "petitioner," "applicant," or "propounder." Instead of "defendant," you might be called a "caveator" or "respondent." These terms all mean the same basic thing: one side is asking the court for something, and the other side is responding.

When you see the word "petition" in these rules, it covers any written request you make to the court asking for a decision or order. So if you file an application or another type of request, the rules that apply to petitions apply to you as well.
