§ 1.10 Conflict of Interest

Members of the Board of Bar Examiners must step aside from any case where a judge would normally have to do the same. In other words, if a judge would be expected to avoid handling a matter because of a conflict, a board member must follow that same standard.

This means board members can't take part in decisions if they have a personal connection to the person applying to become a lawyer, a financial interest in the outcome, or any other situation that would make it hard to be fair and unbiased. The goal is to make sure every applicant gets a fair review from people who have no personal stake in the outcome.

If a board member has any kind of conflict, they need to remove themselves from that specific case. This protects the fairness of the bar admission process and helps make sure decisions are based only on whether the applicant meets the requirements to practice law.
