Rule 603 Oath or Affirmation

Before a witness can speak in court, they must make a promise to tell the truth. This promise can be a religious oath or a non-religious affirmation, depending on what the witness is comfortable with.

The point of this requirement is to make the witness take the moment seriously. The court wants to make sure the witness understands that lying under oath is wrong and has real consequences.
