Most records filed in a criminal case are open to the public. This means anyone can typically look up documents filed in a case, view court filings, and see what has happened in the case.
Some records, though, are kept private. If a record needs to stay confidential, it has to be filed the right way, following the specific rules that cover access to court records. This keeps sensitive information protected while still following the correct legal process.
In short, the public normally gets to see court records, but there are exceptions. When something needs to be kept private, there is a set process for filing it so it stays out of public view.
