Judges have to put their job first. When a judge's court duties conflict with personal activities, hobbies, or outside commitments, the court duties have to win out.
This means a judge can't let personal business, side projects, teaching gigs, volunteer work, or other outside interests get in the way of handling cases and doing the work the court needs done. The public counts on judges to show up, pay attention, and take care of their responsibilities on the bench. Outside activities are fine as long as they don't pull a judge away from that core job.
In practice, this rule serves as a reminder that being a judge isn't just another part-time role. It's the priority, and everything else has to fit around it, not the other way around.
