If someone sues you, you can file a counterclaim against them. This rule says your counterclaim does not have to cancel out or reduce what they are asking for. You can ask for something completely different, or even ask for more money or relief than what they are seeking from you.

In simple terms, your counterclaim does not need to directly cancel out their claim. For example, if a company sues you for $5,000 they say you owe them, you don't have to limit your counterclaim to just fighting that $5,000. You could bring a separate claim against them for $50,000 based on something else they did, even if it has nothing to do with reducing what they say you owe.

This gives people more freedom when fighting back in a lawsuit. You are not boxed in by what the other side is asking for. As long as your counterclaim is otherwise valid, you can pursue it fully, even if it goes far beyond just answering their original claim.
