Rule 1.921 Adjournments

Once a trial starts, the judge has the power to pause or delay it if that's needed to keep things fair. This is called an adjournment. The judge can decide how long the delay should last and can also set conditions, like requiring one side to pay certain costs, before the trial picks back up.

This gives judges flexibility to handle problems that come up during a trial. For example, if a witness suddenly becomes unavailable, new evidence shows up, or someone involved in the case has an emergency, the judge can stop the trial temporarily instead of forcing everyone to rush through it. The goal is to make sure the trial stays fair to both sides.

The judge has final say on whether a delay is needed and what conditions come with it. This means one side can ask for an adjournment, but the judge decides whether to grant it and on what terms.
