Rule 16.608 Improperly included protected information

If you accidentally file a document that includes information that should have been kept private, like a Social Security number or other protected details, you can ask the court to fix it. You do this by filing a request asking the court to black out (redact) the protected information and to temporarily block public access to the document while the court looks into it.

The court can act fast to limit access right away, even before other people involved in the case have a chance to respond. But before making a final decision, the court has to let everyone in the case weigh in. After hearing from all sides, if the judge agrees that private information was wrongly included, the court can keep the document restricted and order a new, properly redacted version to be filed in its place.

This rule gives people a way to correct mistakes and protect sensitive information without having to start over or risk that information staying public longer than necessary.
