Rule 36.4 Grievance commission; divisions

The Iowa Supreme Court Grievance Commission handles complaints against lawyers. This rule explains how the commission organizes itself to review those complaints.

Instead of always working as one large group, the commission can split into smaller teams called divisions. The chair of the commission decides when to use divisions and who sits on each one. Every division has five members, and the chair picks these members based on the specific complaint being reviewed.

The chair also names one person from each division to act as its leader, called the division president. On top of the five regular members, the chair picks two more people to serve as alternates. Alternates can step in if needed, which helps make sure each case still gets a full review even if a regular member can't take part.
