§ 22-2508 Use of force in execution of search warrant.

If police have a valid search warrant, they're allowed to use force to get into a building or property if needed. This means they can break down a door, force open a window, or use other physical means to enter if they can't get in another way.

The force used has to be "necessary and reasonable." This means officers can't use more force than the situation calls for. They should try reasonable methods to get in first, like knocking and announcing themselves, unless circumstances don't allow for that. But if force is genuinely needed to carry out the search, the law allows it.

For someone whose property is being searched, this means you can't legally stop police from entering if they have a proper warrant, even if that means they break a lock or door to get in. The property owner may have a case against police only if the force used was clearly excessive or unnecessary for the situation, not simply because force was used at all.
