II, Sec. 20 Special grand juries; sessions; extensions of sessions

A chief circuit judge can call together a special grand jury when a case needs a long, in-depth investigation that a regular grand jury doesn't have enough time to handle. This gives the court a way to dig deeper into complicated situations without being limited by the normal grand jury schedule.

Once a special grand jury starts, it can stay active until the court decides to end it. However, there's a time limit: it can't run longer than 90 days at a time. If more time is needed, the chief circuit judge can extend the grand jury's session, but only by signing a written order. Each extension adds another 90 days, and this process can repeat as many times as needed to finish the investigation.
