II, Sec. 21 Release of juror from grand jury service and retention as petit juror

Sometimes a person picked for jury duty isn't a good fit for grand jury work, but could still handle regular trial jury duty. When this happens, the judge can excuse that person from the grand jury and move them over to serve as a petit juror instead (the type of juror who sits on regular trial cases).

The judge needs a good reason to make this switch. This rule gives courts flexibility so they don't lose a juror completely just because that person isn't suited for one specific type of jury service. Instead of sending the person home, the court can still use their time and service in a different role.
