II, Sec. 27 Peremptory challenges in civil cases

If you're involved in a civil lawsuit, both sides get a chance to remove some potential jurors without having to give a reason. This rule says each side gets three of these "peremptory challenges." If there are co-parties on the same side who actually have conflicting interests with each other, each of them also gets three challenges of their own, not just three shared between them.

The rule also covers what happens when the court calls extra jurors as backups (called alternates). If the court calls one or two additional jurors beyond the regular jury, each side gets one more challenge to use. So instead of just three, they would have four challenges available.

The point of this rule is to make sure both sides have a fair say in who ends up on the jury, especially when there are extra jurors involved or when parties on the same side don't actually agree with each other.
