Courts must keep detailed records for cases involving minors with mental illness. This includes the original petition that started the case and the doctor certificates required by law. Courts can keep these records on paper or save them as microfilm copies.

These records are not open to the public. They stay sealed, meaning only the minor involved (called the respondent) or their lawyer can normally see them. If someone else wants access, like the person who filed the case, they have to ask the court. The court will hold a hearing and let the minor know about it first. The judge will only allow access if that person shows a good reason for needing the records.

This rule protects the privacy of minors going through mental health proceedings. It makes sure sensitive medical and legal information does not become public. At the same time, it gives a path for someone to get access if they have a real need and can explain that need to a judge.
