Art. 1920 Costs; parties liable; procedure for taxing

When a court case ends, someone usually has to pay the court costs. These are things like filing fees and other expenses tied to the case. Normally, the person who loses the case (called the "party cast") has to pay these costs, unless the judge's ruling says something different.

If there's a dispute about who owes what costs, the winning party can ask the court to settle it through a process called a "rule to show cause." This is basically a request for the judge to make a clear decision about the costs.

The judge also has some flexibility here. Even though the losing party usually pays, the judge can decide to split the costs differently if that seems more fair. For example, if both sides share some blame for how the case played out, the judge might order each side to pay part of the costs instead of making one person pay it all.
