Art. 2380 Loss of recourse when purchaser fails to give judgment debtor timely notice

If you buy property at a sheriff's sale and someone later sues to kick you off the property (an eviction suit), you normally have the right to get your money back from the judgment debtor if you lose that title fight. But you can lose that right to recover your money if you don't warn the judgment debtor about the lawsuit in time for them to step in and help defend it.

This matters because the judgment debtor might know things about the property or the case that could have stopped the eviction suit from succeeding. If you keep them in the dark and they lose that chance to defend the title, and it turns out they could have won that fight, then you can't come back later and make them pay you back for your loss.

In short, this rule is about fair warning. If you want to protect your right to get reimbursed, you need to tell the original owner right away when someone challenges your ownership. Waiting too long, or not telling them at all, can cost you the chance to recover your money even if you end up losing the property.
