Art. 647 Permissive joinder governed by rules of cumulation of actions

Multiple people can join together as plaintiffs, or be joined together as defendants, in the same lawsuit. This is called permissive joinder, and it means the parties choose to combine their claims rather than being forced to.

When people want to do this, they have to follow the same rules that apply to combining separate lawsuits into one case. Those rules are found in Articles 463 through 465 of the same code. In short, if you want to team up with other plaintiffs or add other defendants to a single suit, the same basic requirements for combining claims apply, whether you started with one lawsuit that grew or several people deciding to file together from the start.

This matters because it keeps the process consistent. Courts do not have separate standards for people who choose to join a suit versus claims that get combined later. Everyone follows the same basic rules about when claims can be joined and when they cannot.
