When a trust owns property or has a legal claim, the trustee is the person who must file the lawsuit to protect it. The beneficiaries of the trust generally cannot sue on their own to enforce those rights. Instead, the law puts that job in the trustee's hands, since the trustee is the one managing the trust and looking out for its interests.

There are some exceptions written into other laws that might allow someone else to sue instead. But as a general rule, if you're dealing with a trust and need to take legal action to protect what belongs to it, the trustee is the one who needs to bring that case to court.
