Art. 573.3 Running of time limitations; exception; crimes against the Firefighters' Retirement System

If someone commits a crime against the Firefighters' Retirement System, like fraud or theft involving the fund, the clock for filing charges doesn't start right away. Normally, prosecutors have a limited window of time to bring charges after a crime happens. But for these specific crimes, that time limit doesn't begin until the Firefighters' Retirement System actually discovers that the crime occurred.

This matters because these kinds of crimes can be hidden or hard to detect. Someone might misuse the fund's money in a way that isn't obvious right away. This rule makes sure prosecutors still have a fair chance to file charges, even if it takes a while for the retirement system to figure out that something illegal happened. The countdown to file charges only starts once the crime is found out, not when it was actually committed.
