If you are the person responding to an appeal (called the appellee or respondent), your written brief needs to follow a specific order. This rule lays out exactly what must go into that document and in what sequence.

First, you need to include an index listing all the legal authorities you cite, like cases, statutes, or other rules. This helps the court quickly find and check your references. Second, you need a short, clear statement explaining the background of the case. This gives the court the basic facts and history without going into unnecessary detail.

Finally, your argument section must stick closely to the actual issues raised in the appeal. You cannot wander into unrelated topics or bring up new issues that were not part of the case. The goal is to keep your response focused and organized, so the court can easily follow your position on the specific points being appealed.
