When a judge, whether currently serving or retired, gets assigned to work on a court by order of the Supreme Court, that judge may be entitled to extra pay or reimbursement for expenses under the law. To get paid, the judge has to send their claim to the Judicial Administrator first.

The Judicial Administrator reviews the claim and, if it's approved, sends it to the comptroller. The comptroller is the one who actually issues the payment. This process makes sure there's a check in place before any extra money goes out to a judge working a special assignment.
