Rule 401 Test for Relevant Evidence

Evidence is relevant when it helps prove or disprove something that matters to the case. Even a small connection counts, as long as the evidence makes a fact at least a little more or less likely to be true.

Not every fact qualifies, though. The fact in question has to actually matter to the outcome of the case. If a piece of evidence relates to something that has no bearing on the final decision, it does not meet this standard.
