Rule 1 Scope of Rules

These rules explain how justice court cases are supposed to work. Rules 1 through 10 apply to every case in justice court, no matter if it's a civil case or a criminal case. Rules 11 through 27 only apply to civil cases, like disputes over money or property. If a case is criminal, the Mississippi Rules of Criminal Procedure take over and control what happens, even if they say something different than these rules.

No court can make up its own local rules without getting approval from the Mississippi Supreme Court first. This keeps the rules consistent across the state instead of every court doing things differently.

If someone breaks these rules, they could face penalties. This might include being held in contempt of court or facing other disciplinary action, depending on what happened.
