Rule 114.03 Waiver of Service by Parent, Guardian or Custodian

If you're a parent, guardian, or custodian of a juvenile involved in a court case, you normally have the right to be formally served with a court summons. This rule explains two ways that right can be given up, or "waived."

First, you can sign a written waiver giving up your right to be served. If you do this, the court must give you a copy of the petition (the document explaining the case against the juvenile) at the same time you sign the waiver.

Second, simply showing up at the hearing counts as waiving your right to formal service, even if you never signed anything. In this case, the court still has to give you a copy of the petition before the hearing starts. Either way, you're entitled to see the petition so you know what the case is about before you take part in the hearing.
