Rule 4-105 Appointment of referees.

Referees who handle child support and paternity cases are appointed by the judges of the Nebraska Supreme Court. To get this job, a person must be a licensed attorney in good standing in Nebraska. Before starting the work, the referee must take an oath, the same kind of oath other judicial officers take.

The Supreme Court also has the power to remove a referee from this position at any time. This means the job is not permanent and depends on the Court's ongoing approval.
