When someone files paperwork to start a probate case for a person who died, they need to say whether the surviving spouse is the parent of all the deceased person's children. If the spouse is not the parent of every child (for example, if the deceased person had kids from a previous relationship), this must be clearly stated right at the beginning of the case.

This rule exists so the court knows from the start whether there are children who are not related to the surviving spouse. This matters because those children may have different rights to the estate than children the spouse and deceased person had together. Letting the court know this information upfront helps make sure everyone with a legal interest in the estate gets properly notified and treated fairly under the law.
