Rule 409 Payment of medical and similar expenses.

If someone pays for another person's medical bills after an accident, that payment can't be used in court as proof that they caused the accident or did something wrong. This applies even if the payment was just offered or promised, not actually made.

The idea behind this rule is to let people help others after an injury without worrying that their kindness will be twisted into an admission of guilt. For example, if a driver pays for the other person's hospital bill after a car accident, that payment alone can't be brought up in court to argue that the driver was at fault. People should feel free to cover someone's medical costs without it being held against them later.

Keep in mind this rule only blocks the payment itself from being used as proof of fault. If someone says something else at the same time, like admitting they were speeding, that separate statement could still be used against them in court.
