Rule 610 Religious beliefs or opinions.

Lawyers cannot attack or boost a witness's credibility by bringing up their religious beliefs. If someone is testifying in court, the other side cannot argue that the witness is more or less trustworthy because of what they believe religiously, what religion they practice, or whether they have any religious beliefs at all.

This means a lawyer cannot ask a witness questions about their faith just to make the jury think badly (or well) of them. For example, a lawyer cannot suggest a witness is lying because they don't attend church, or suggest a witness is telling the truth because they are known to be very religious. Religion simply is not allowed to be used as a tool to judge whether someone is being honest on the stand.

This rule keeps the focus on the actual facts and testimony in the case, rather than on personal beliefs that have nothing to do with whether someone is telling the truth.
