Every document filed in a children's court case needs to have specific information at the top, called a caption. This caption tells you which court is handling the case, including the state, county, and judicial district. It also lists the names of the people involved and gives a short title explaining what the document is about, like a petition or a motion.

The title on a document does not actually change any legal rights or outcomes. It just helps identify what the paper is for. The real legal effect comes from the content of the document, not from what it's called.

For delinquency cases and abuse and neglect cases, there's a specific way documents must be titled. They should say "In the Matter of" followed by the child's name. If more than one child is involved in the case, each child's name should be included in the title.
