Sometimes private, protected information gets revealed in ways that aren't fair to the person it belongs to. This rule protects people in those situations.

If someone was forced by a court to share privileged information, but that order was actually wrong, the information can't be used against them later. The same is true if someone shared privileged information without ever getting a real chance to object and claim their right to keep it private.

In both cases, the law treats the disclosure as if it doesn't count. Even though the information got out, it can't be used as evidence against the person who had the right to keep it confidential. This protects people from losing their legal rights just because a mistake was made or they weren't given a fair chance to speak up.
