Rule 7-801 Modification of sentence.

A metropolitan court judge can lower a sentence or fine after it's been given, but can never make it harsher. This can happen anytime up until the maximum jail time that could have been ordered has passed. Before any change is made, everyone involved in the case must be told about it, and the court must hold a hearing to discuss it.

If someone is appealing their case, the judge cannot change the sentence while that appeal is still going on. One allowed type of change is switching a jail sentence to probation instead, since that counts as reducing the punishment. However, the judge cannot erase or change a guilty verdict itself, and if someone already paid a fine, the court won't order that money to be given back.
