Court reporters and court monitors who work for the district court need to be covered by a surety bond. This is basically a type of insurance that protects against mistakes or misconduct. The district court clerk is responsible for making sure the bond premium gets paid to the state's Risk Management Division for these employees.

The bond itself must list the State of New Mexico as the insured party, not the individual reporter or monitor. This means the state is the one protected if something goes wrong.

If a court reporter works as an independent contractor instead of a direct district employee, the bonding rules work differently. Their bond requirements are spelled out in their individual contracts instead of following the standard process used for district employees.
