§ 1033-A Initial appearance

When someone is named as a respondent in a Family Court case, the first time they show up in court after the petition is filed is called the "initial appearance." This is the starting point of the case from the court's point of view.

If the court needs more time and pushes this first court date back, those later dates still count as part of the initial appearance. In other words, the initial appearance isn't just one single moment. It covers the first court date and any follow-up dates that happen because the case gets adjourned, or postponed, before real proceedings begin.

This matters because certain rights and deadlines in a Family Court case are tied to what happens at this first appearance. For example, this is usually when a respondent learns about the charges or claims against them and gets information about their right to a lawyer.
