§ 135 Term of office

Judges who get elected to family court in counties outside New York City serve a term of ten years. Once elected, a judge holds the position for a full decade before needing to run for the seat again.

This rule helps give families and communities a sense of stability, since the same judge will typically handle family court matters in that county for a long stretch of time.
