§ 320.1 The initial appearance; definition

When someone is accused in a Family Court case (called the respondent), the first time they show up in court after the case starts is called the "initial appearance." This is a formal step in the process, and it's the starting point for several important things the court needs to do.

If the court has to delay this first appearance for any reason and reschedule it, those later dates still count as part of the same "initial appearance" process. In other words, this term covers the first court date and any follow-up dates needed before the case moves to its next stage.

The specific things that happen during this initial appearance are outlined in another rule, section 320.4. That rule spells out what the court and the people involved are supposed to do at this stage.
