§ 445 Order of support by relative; duration

If a judge decides that a relative, such as a stepparent, has a legal duty to help support someone in the family, the judge can order that person to pay a fair amount of money for support. This happens after a hearing where the court looks at the facts and decides whether that relative should be responsible under the support laws.

The amount the relative has to pay is based on what the court thinks is reasonable, not a fixed amount set by law. The court has flexibility to decide what makes sense for the situation.

This type of support order is not permanent. If circumstances change, either the person paying support or the person receiving it can ask the court to change or end the order. The court will only make this change if there is a good reason, such as a change in income, health, or family situation.
