§ 533 Adjournment on application of party

If you're involved in a Family Court case and need more time, you or the other party can ask the judge to postpone the hearing. This is called an adjournment. The judge won't automatically say yes, though. You have to give a good reason why you need the delay.

If the judge does agree to push back the hearing date, they can also require the respondent (the person the case is against) to promise, in writing, that they will show up for the next court date. This promise is meant to make sure the case keeps moving forward and the respondent doesn't skip out on future hearings.
