§ 580-610 Effect of registration for modification

When a child support order from another state gets registered in New York for the purpose of changing it, New York courts can treat that order like it was their own. This means New York can enforce the payments and handle the case the same way it would if a New York court had created the order in the first place.

However, there's an important limit. New York can only actually change the terms of that out-of-state order if it meets specific requirements laid out in other sections of the law (sections 580-611 or 580-613). This means just registering the order in New York doesn't automatically give the state power to modify it. Certain conditions have to be met first, like proper notice to both parents or specific rules about which state has authority over the case.

In short, registering an order lets New York enforce it right away, but changing the actual terms of support requires meeting extra legal steps first.
