§ 2509 Firearms inventory

When someone in charge of an estate (like an executor or administrator) has to file a list of the estate's property with the court, that list must include specific details about any guns that belonged to the person who died. This covers firearms, shotguns, and rifles as those terms are legally defined under New York's penal law.

The list has to clearly describe each gun, not just mention that guns exist. This filing goes to the Surrogate's Court in the county handling the estate case. A copy also has to go to the state's Division of Criminal Justice Services.

This rule exists so that guns owned by someone who has died get tracked properly. It helps make sure firearms are accounted for during the estate process, just like other property, but with extra detail because of what they are.
