Rule 66 Receivers

If a court has appointed a receiver in a case, that case cannot just be dropped or dismissed on its own. A judge has to approve any dismissal first. This protects the receiver's work and makes sure the court stays in control of what happens to the property or business the receiver is managing.

Beyond this specific protection, all the normal rules of civil procedure still apply. This is true whether someone is asking the court to appoint a receiver, or whether a receiver who has already been appointed is suing someone or getting sued. In other words, having a receiver involved doesn't create a completely different set of legal rules. The case still moves forward the same way any other civil case would, following the standard steps for filing documents, gathering evidence, and arguing motions.

The main point of this rule is to make sure receiverships don't get cut short unexpectedly. Because a receiver is often handling money, property, or a business on behalf of the court, ending the case abruptly could hurt the people who depend on that property being managed properly. Requiring a judge's approval before dismissal gives everyone a chance to make sure loose ends are tied up first.
