Rule 47 Motions

If you want to ask the court to do something, you need to file what's called a motion. This is basically a formal request asking a judge for an order or a decision on something in your case.

If you're not already in the middle of a trial or hearing, your motion normally has to be in writing. A judge can allow you to make the request out loud instead, but that's their call, not something you can decide on your own.

Your motion also needs to explain two things clearly: why you're asking (the reasons or legal grounds behind your request) and what you actually want the court to do (the specific order or relief you're seeking). You can also back up your motion with an affidavit, which is a written statement of facts that you swear is true, to give the judge more support for your request.
