Rule 403 Excluding Relevant Evidence for Prejudice, Confusion, Waste of Time, or Other Reasons

A judge can keep out evidence even if it's relevant to the case. This happens when the evidence might cause more harm than good. For example, if evidence could unfairly make the jury angry or biased against someone, confuse the real issues in the case, or mislead the jury into making a decision based on the wrong thing, the judge can decide not to allow it.

This rule also lets judges block evidence that would waste everyone's time. If proving a small point would take way too long compared to how much it actually matters, the judge can leave it out. The same goes for evidence that just repeats what's already been shown. If the jury has already heard the same point made several times, the judge doesn't have to let lawyers keep hammering it home.

The key idea is balance. The judge weighs how useful the evidence is against the problems it might cause. Only when those problems clearly outweigh the value of the evidence will the judge exclude it. This gives judges some control over trials so they stay fair and focused, without letting emotional or repetitive evidence take over.
