If a lawyer facing discipline has been committed to a facility or declared legally incompetent, there are special steps for delivering legal papers and notices to them. These papers must be delivered following the same rules used in regular civil court cases, or by following the specific rules set by the Professional Responsibility Tribunal.
Once someone is appointed as a guardian ad litem for that person, things change. A guardian ad litem is someone appointed by the court to look out for the interests of a person who can't fully represent themselves. After this appointment happens, all future notices about the case get sent to the guardian ad litem instead of directly to the person facing discipline.
This rule makes sure that people who are committed or ruled incompetent still have someone receiving important legal notices on their behalf. It protects their rights during the disciplinary process, even when they can't personally handle their own legal matters.
