§ 1582 Officer may break into buildings.

When a court orders property to be taken back (like in a dispute over who owns something), the sheriff or officer handling the case has the power to break into a building if the property is hidden inside. But the officer can't just force their way in right away.

The officer first has to knock and ask to come in. They also have to ask for the property to be handed over. Only if someone refuses to let them in or refuses to give up the property can the officer then break open doors, locks, or other barriers to get inside and retrieve it.

This rule protects people from having their property broken into without warning. It gives everyone a chance to cooperate first, and only allows force as a last resort when someone refuses to comply.
